Here’s an interesting article from the Sydney Morning Herald.
to end the week.

Back when I was living in Sydney, I never did notice that 4.6 billion dollar pet industry.
I thought Japan was over the top when we came here but maybe it’s just something that’s overtaking the world.
In the 2 years and 4 months that we’ve had Fei; I’ve met, spoken to and emailed with lots of people who indulge their Fur children just as you would your non-Fur children.

I really don’t think we’re treating our dogs as just dogs anymore.
Now that we have a lot more time and money on our hands, information at our fingertips and lower birth rates; we scour the world for the best in dog food (think BARF, Rehydrated, Organic, BARF Patties, say what?).
We send our babies to Accupuncture, Hydrotherapy and Doggy Adventures (well, I haven’t but I’m sure I will).

When I’m away from home a long time and can’t get back for tea (I usually go home to walk Fei or check on her), I make sure she goes to Dog School (it’s more like a playgroup/ socialistion thing for Dogs, really).

I used to secretly turn the A/C on for Fei during the day and forget to turn off the heated carpet (sorry Caz!).
I buy an extra doona so Fei can sleep on the bed.
I suppose I treat Fei more like a family member or a loved one ( I cringe when people think I treat her like my daughter) and I would do these things for people I love. Take them out to nice restaurants, take care of their comforts, etc.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m glad people love/ induldge/ spoil their pooches.
Because this means that none of them will get left behind when people move and that’s alright for me.

Well, this person did.
This unemployed Japanese animal-lover provided for his pets by donning a dog mask and robbing shops.

Apparently, welfare isn’t enough to support two dogs, five cats, five turtles, two snakes and an aquarium of tropical fish.
So “Dogman” went out donning a dog mask and found himself JPY 587,000 ($5670) wealthier.

DWB members, what do you think? Would you steal for your dog?

I know I spend a lot on Fei; way more than I should but only because I’m working and can afford it now.
I never stinge on food because that’s the number one investment on your dog (think of the long-term health repercussions and expensive vet visits).
I’ve gotten better at refraining myself from buying toys and treats. Caz’s naggy words, “This toy costs as much as your school textbook.” worked really well and since I got my own dehydrator, I don’t buy commercial treats anymore.
I know in a few years’ time, things will change a little. I will be studying full-time and I should watch how I spend. But hopefully, we will be where you can rock up to a butcher and ask for a kilo of mince/offals and they will be cheap! Fresh, wholesome and cheap!

On a happier note, here’s a list of Sydney’s current and proposed dog parks for reference.

Where shall we live, Fei?

Hey everypup and girl girl,

The new joint is cool.
We live really close to Jazz and Dixie and we’re only a hop and a skip away from Komazawa Dog Run. We try to go there almost everyday so Fei can have her crazy sprinting sessions and a quick round of fetch. It’s also nice for her to play with other doggies. We especially like it when there are other big dogs around for Fei to rough-house with.

Last Sunday, E’s friend came over to say Hello and we all went to the Dog Run.

Fei getting a good back scratch.

J and D’s mum is back in Oz for the moment so we couldn’t meet up with them.

p.s. E was offered a formal conditional acceptance into the SLP (Speech-Language Pathology)progamme, FINALLY!!
Fingers crossed we get there all in one piece. Just a bit more to go, Fei. Then we can be back in wide open spaces again.
