When we moved to Tokyo, I was really worried that we wouldn’t be able to find good quality dog food and supplies similar to the ones we bought back home. Thankfully, after some google translation/searches, we were able to find reliable suppliers and order easily over the net.

I try to stay away from unfamiliar Japanese brands mainly because I cannot read everything on the labels and there is just too much risk with companies masquerading to be organic. You never know if they are just cashing in on the dog boom or are real dog companies. Also, I see too much “chicken-meal” or “corn” in the ingredients here so I’ve been really put off by local brands.

Although I have not been able to meet everyone who reads this blog; I know that there are some foreign readers here who have either moved or are moving to Tokyo with their dogs.
I’m not getting paid for this ‘advertising’ but I’d like to share some great online shops which I order some of Fei’s food and supplies from. I hope you find them useful and please leave me a message to say hi!

When I don’t cook for Fei or feed her BARF (Bones and Raw Food), I feed her Timberwolf Kibbles and Dehyrated Dog Food from the Honest Kitchen. I also buy Pet milk for her, some tendons to chew on, frozen (and defrosted) bones, pee sheets and the ocassional pig’s ear to munch on. I order most of my heartworm and frontline from Vetstop in Australia. They deliver some products to Japan but there are some regulations, so please check to make sure.

I order pee sheets in bulk from Pet Food and Goods TOM CAT . I get 160 sheets for 6,384Yen.

I also get 12 x 1litre packs of Pet milk for 5976Yen.

They have all sorts of supplies here so happy shopping. Delivery is additional so make sure you get heaps of stuff at one go!

Next, I buy Timberwolf kibbles and the Honest Kitchen from Pet Shop Bros.

I love shopping from them because they have a point system and you can get discounts. They also always give me lots of freebies and samples. They have a good selection of organic dog food including Timberwolf, The Honest Kitchen, Barf Frozen patties and supplements like the Missing Link.
You can also request when you’d like delivery and if you want the bigger bags of food to be repacked or to be delivered with bubble wrap. I always chose the COD option because bank transfers or paying through the convenience stores is difficult for me to do.

I know that TW kibbles and the Honest Kitchen are pretty high-grade expensive dog food but I really don’t want to take any gambles with dog food after the dog food scare in 2007.

Sometimes when they run out of the Honest Kitchen over at Pet Shop Bros, we go over to AMBY to buy that and some other treats.
We like shopping there too because they give us samples and nice tea satchets (for human consumption).

Going BARF here in Tokyo is pretty difficult.
Firstly, trying to communicate to the local butcher what you want is a hurdle and then finding out all the icky bits in Japanese names is another trying experience.

So in addition to whatever I can find at the supermarkets, I also order some (not anymore, I’ve been a bit lazy) food like a bag of lamb bones and some roo mince from The Meat Guy in Nagoya. They have an English website so that’s easy to find what you need for your dogs and your family.
For hardcore BARFers, they sell pig lungs, feet, tails, hearts, livers so if you want them, you can get them here. I don’t know of another other butcher who would sell these things to you.

I wrote about this shop before. This is a raw food club (or store) for doggies called the 100 Club. I like this place a lot and wish that I can go there more often. If you go to the outlets (there is one near Komazawa dog run), you can pick out bones and raw food for your doggies.
I think you can customise bags of dog food too to include offals. I haven’t tried this yet as I only bought bones for Fei the last and only time I was there.

The staff there are very friendly and they speak some English. I would definitely look into this as a substitute to kibbles.

I hope this post is useful. If there are any dog owners in Tokyo needing help to navigate through the ordering pages, please send me an email and I’ll see if I can help out.
